FBI aware of TPLF’s terrorist activities: Genocide Watch

By Abebe Gellaw
(ESAT News)–Genocide Watch, the Global coalition to end genocide and mass atrocities, says that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is well aware of the fact that the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) is a terrorist organization that the United States should label as such.
In an exclusive interview with ESAT, President of Genocide Watch, Prof. Gregory Stanton, said any specific threats from TPLF agents and operatives in the United States should be reported to the FBI right away.  “The FBI has got the TPLF already in its sights. It knows very well that the TPLF is a terrorist organization,” he said.
He also pointed out that the U.S. should declare the TPLF a terrorist organization and made clear that efforts would be exerted to bring that to the attention of the concerned authorities. TPLF is already registered in the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), kept by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, a center of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

He noted that TPLF’s assassination plots and criminal activities in the United States would have serious ramifications on the questionable relationships it has with the Government of the United States. “First of all, FBI will try to hunt them down, arrest them and put them in prison. Secondly, it will have ramifications on the foreign policy of the United States towards Ethiopia because the TPLF is still in charge of the government there.”
He urged the government of the United States to seriously review the assistance it gives to Ethiopia in light of the criminal activities of the TPLF. “Our government should have a hard look at the kinds of assistance we are giving to Ethiopia since it has a criminal regime in charge of the government.”
Special FBI Agent Greg Comcowich told ESAT that the agency would take seriously any criminal activities that violate not only the civil rights of individuals but also the constitution of the United States.
“Anybody who threatens people’s lives because of their political views or attempt to usurp one’s constitutionally protected First Rights Amendment will be dealt with appropriately. That is not the way America works,” he said.
He also noted that the FBI takes allegations of being agents of a foreign government very seriously. He encouraged Ethiopians who feel threatened to contact their local FBI branches.
Prof. Stanton advised that Ethiopian exiles should not take any inkling of threats lightly. “The justice department has never declared the TPLF a terrorist organization the way it should but it is clearly the arm of a criminal government, which is the TPLF government in Ethiopia. The FBI needs to be aware of any inkling of threats against anybody, any Ethiopian. If they are threatened they need to report to the FBI.”
He pointed out that it is outrageous to try to persecute and threaten anyone for exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights of free speech in the United States. “We have perhaps the freest speech in the world here. It is not free speech to conspire to commit a murder. That is a violation which is not protected by our First Rights Amendment,” he noted.
The Genocide Watch chief underlined the need for Ethiopians to get organized to fend off terrorist threats by the TPLF and its agents that are illegally trying to violate the civil rights of Ethiopian exiles by spying and intimidating them into silence. “It is helpful to organize to challenge an organized group like the TPLF. That is why we need organizations like FREE and solidarity movement…The best antidote to a criminal organization like the TPLF is a legal organization,” he said.
The Forum for Rights and Equality in Ethiopia (FREE), a coalition of 18 international and local advocacy groups, is under formation to make a global effort to press for change in Ethiopia. Genocide Watch is among the founding members of the new international front that will be launched once all the groundwork is complete, it was learnt.
Regarding members and supporters of the TPLF that claim political asylum in the U.S. under false pretense of facing persecution in Ethiopia, he pointed out that if anyone becomes a member and supporter of the TPLF in the U.S., the main political persecutor and tormentor in Ethiopia, that person would lose his or her claim to political asylum in the Unites states. “That person should be sent back to Ethiopia because they would not be under any political persecution at all as members of the party that carries the persecution out.”
In his message to Ethiopians, Prof. Stanton called on them to be steadfast in their struggle for freedom and justice and never lose hope. “Eventually the TPLF will fall. Those who are committing these kinds of acts of terror should also be aware that they are eventually going to be held accountable for their crimes. We are keeping their names. So don’t ever be under the illusion that we will forget them,” he said.
Professor Stanton, who was a Yale-educated lawyer, is globally recognized for successfully leading an international effort to bring leaders of the Khmer Rouge to justice for committing genocide and mass atrocities in Cambodia. He founded Genocide Watch in 1991 with a mission to predict, prevent, stop, and punish genocide and other forms of mass murder. Genocide Watch has already identified Ethiopia under the TPLF as one of the few countries in the world facing serious risk genocidal conflicts.
In his message to Ethiopian across the world, Prof. Stanton called on Ethiopians to be steadfast in their struggle for freedom and justice and never lose hope. “Eventually the TPLF will fall. Those who are committing these kinds of acts of terror should also be aware that they are eventually going to be held accountable for their crimes. We are keeping their names. So don’t ever be under the illusion that we will forget them.”
Meanwhile, a coalition of political and rights groups fighting for justice have issued a strong-worded press release condemning the recent alleged assassination plot in Boston. The group, Joint Actions Coordinating Committee of Ethiopian Political & Civic Democratic Forces, demanded the U.S. government to take appropriate measures against the terrorist regime in Ethiopia which has been committing gross human rights violation and extrajudicial killings.
“We also ask the FBI to investigate and expel agents of the Ethiopian government whose sole purpose is intimidating and spying on the Diaspora, and indulging in illegal activities including transfer of funds for top government officials to the U.S. and to offshore accounts,” the released said.

AU is a shield for dictators

BY BAILE DERSEH MIHRETE
BAILE DERSEH MIHRETE, AuthorThey, the so called Africans are plotting here in Addis Ababa to get a licence to oppress African people and exploit the continent`s resources without any consequences. Allowing with drawl from ICC is undermining justice and reinforcing violence and violation of Human Rights.
AU is nothing but a shield for dictators to abuse the power .they were given by the people, through their greed, Africa will continue to be exploited for resources while the children of Africa starve and slaughter each other  for crumbs. Africans who try to rise for change are killed and intimated. The images of Africans continue to deteriorate not because of history of colonialism but because the leaders suppress the people to be independent or the government that delivers more poverty while selling Africa wealth to highest bidders.
Prime minister Hailmariam Desalgn claims that Africa born organizations is too much concerned about African people than any others organizations .But in history of AU there has not been a single time that AU has raised its concern to stop the massacre of innocents, The plight of millions of refuges. most regimes in Africa have designed a political system that is sustained by corruption and repression and are not strong enough to tolerate dissent .AU rule for themselves and for Africa dictators not for the poor and for the innocent people.so how come these organization can bring justice and keep the continents interest?
African criminal in powerful get protected by other African criminals in power ,the fact that the union is African born organization that does not add up to or mean, it is in the interest of Africans ,it is instead protect the interests of the most corrupt and powerful few .As far as I know there was and is not time that the AU has brought or condemned the perpetrator of atrocity to justice .In fact these killers were /are among the union whom they condemn to. Their courts are impotent to yield justice for voiceless and powerless and yet Prime Minister Hailmariam Desalgn theory shows how ignorant he is, it makes me think he has disconnected from facts.
African leader want green light to commit atrocity on their own citizens by claiming that ICC is racist. Let’s see the atrocity committed in Sudan, in Liberia, in Ethiopia, in Uganda, in Libya and in all across the continent .these leaders are shameless, they talk about injustice these aging and corrupt autocrats who see their own citizens as their private garden.
They want send a message that they are discriminated and they are singled out etc. and yet they never treat their own peoples as human beings, they never work for their own people, they never get elected, they never solve injustice in the court instead their gun and prison are their tools .prison in Africa are full of people /kids, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, young and old/.they simply are a shame of Africa ,they have no single moral authority to talk the injustice and the discrimination that they never had and have in their country legal system. They deny natural rights of their own people .Their jails are full of innocent people who want to stand against the injustice, they prosecute and kill the voiceless and the helpless their own other than their families and associates. They destroy families, they kill kids, rape women, deprive millions a right to live in their own land and they commit other countless atrocity against humanity, they consume the most resource of their land ,they are greedy, selfish and corrupt and yet their millions citizens are starving and have not access of basic necessity like water, food, house/shelter /and school.
What I have said is in most Africa state there is a broken justice system, leaders who kill and destroy or commit atrocity in their own people and get away with it .who hold them accountable that is ICC .It is time for the  western nations and Americans to stand with the people instead of supporting armed criminal political regimes.

ICC shows Kenyatta-Ruto cases no escape from justice: Where did AU go wrong on these highly charged matter?

by Keffyalew Gebremedhin, The Ethiopia Observatory
Automaticity of Ruto’s excusal from his trial rejected
We already had occasion on October 19, 2013 to comment on the ICC Trial Chamber’s conditional “excusal from continuous presence at trial” given to ICC-indictee Uhuru Kenyatta on October 18, 2013. We showed uneasy sympathy with the Court’s action, out of awareness that the Kenyan state could not be auto- or remote-piloted, especially at this time when that country needs the full attention of its head of state.Where did AU go? ICC shows Kenyatta-Ruto cases no escape from justice

On the other hand, when the Appeals Chamber this morning announced its decision rejecting ICC-indictee William Ruto’s request, which was supported by Burundi, Eritrea, Rwanda and Tanzania – demanding similar treatment of conditional excusal as Kenyatta’s under Article 63 (1) of the Statute – we took great satisfaction. We immediately recognized that this latest decision would put into balance the right to justice of both sides of the Kenyan tragedy – those in the dock and the victims – an outcome of the bloody 2007-2008 election.
What this action by the Court reminds us is that justice is indivisible – a notion and principle to which the African Union (AU) has totally ignored or been contemptuous of. Therefore, in upholding the appeal by the Prosecutor, what the Appeals Chamber has done is to inform the world that protracted advocacy of justice for powerful people we witnessed at the AU summit and ever since is not necessarily justice for ordinary citizens, especially the victims.
For this precedent-setting decision, this blog would congratulate Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and her energy, which sprung her into action against the granting to Ruto of conditional absence from the trial with 20-page appeal document the Prosecutor entitled: “The accused shall be present during the trial.”
The Prosecutor’s essential point is that “The Majority of Trial Chamber V(a) (“Majority”) erred in law when it disregarded this statutory requirement and excused Mr Ruto from attending substantially all of his trial.” In explaining that, she stated, “Whatever “discretion” a Trial Chamber may have, it does not permit it to discard controlling statutory requirements, or to substitute its own policy preferences for those of the States Parties. The Majority it [sic] is bound to apply the law as it stands. The Decision fails to do this, and is incorrect as a result.”
Meanwhile, it is our understanding that whatever resolution that is being drafted for action by the Security Council, requesting the ICC to defer the trial for a year for both Kenyan ICC-indictees, may in this situation be forced to move to its natural death. We are equally pleased by the position the United States took, as articulated on October 23, 2013 briefing to the press. There, the State Department indicated, “We continue to encourage Kenya to meet its commitments to ensuring accountability for the victims of the post-election violence, including by cooperating with the ICC.”
The AU Chairman and a few of his colleague’s anti-ICC highnoon
Today’s important decision at the ICC’s Appeal Chamber brings this blog to winding down its long engagement on this matter. Therefore, as a concluding remark on the efforts so far, a revisitation is made hereunder regarding the AU’s misguided action against the ICC – assuming that a lesson or two would be learnt. It should be clear at the outset, however, that this blog is not defending ICC’s imperfections, although even there it represents improvements as compared to our national and regional failings as far as justice and human dignity are concerned.
As ineffective as the Court may have been, it is our considered view that Africans could benefit more by seeing it as work in progress and hence the need to strengthen it; we sincerely believe and say in the circumstances, it remains the last recourse for the peoples of Africa – indeed other developing regions too –and mechanism for small redress via international justice.
For this, we begin from Ethiopia’s chairmanship of the AU. Issues aside, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn’s secular crusade against the Court has been blindly persistent and naïvely risk-seeker. Fortunately, instead of giving indicted African leaders in power total relief from accountability while in office – as the AU leaders had wanted – with its clear decisions Kenyatta and Ruto, the ICC has successfully countered the AU’s excesses, which are aimed at protecting those in power.
The prime minister’s headlong dive into this imbroglio started in early 2013, with Ethiopia’s assumption of the rotating chairmanship of the organization. As a long time keen observer of the AU and Ethiopia, I must frankly state that Hailemariam’s arguments on this matter have been fortified by emotions, not the logic and clarity the situation demands. Obviously that is why the anti-ICC position he tried to promote within Africa and the international community has appeared demented – including that of the few cheerleading heads of state colleagues of his in East Africa, driving him from the front and behind.
More importantly, the cause they claim to have espoused, i.e., ensuring respect for the dignity of Africa and Africans became two-edged sword. The majority of Africa did not need persuasion to see that the efforts of some of our leaders was vacuous and, at its worst, deceptive.
Why do I say this?
It is because, by definition the ‘African dignity’ platform they campaigned on was that of the ‘dignity of serving African heads of state.’ Experience has shown that this ‘dignity’ only empowers them to imprison at any time without due course; it is the freedom and liberty to silence and cruelly eliminate political opponents. In reality, it is the indignity by which they empower themselves to determine the contents of election boxes to remain in power.
When that does not work for them as shortcut to power, their ‘African dignity’ is translated into the power to cause division of all sorts amongst peoples and within society along ethnic lines. With that they tear apart communities, a country or countries with rich cultures, history and sense of unity that have kept the peoples together and at peace and mutual tolerance.
Briefly put, the crux of their logic is that this ‘African dignity’ needed the defen

Residents of the Gambella Regional State, Godera woreda, attacked and set the property of the Indian farm, Verdanta Harvest Plc., on fire on account of destroying the rich forest resources in the woreda where Verdanta has some 5,000 hectares for tea plantation.
According to sources in the area, the vigilantes attacked the plantation compound on Tuesday late night and set ablaze stores, fuel tankers, machineries like tractors and excavators and logs of timber, allegedly harvested from the land the company took for tea plantation. Gatlowak Tute, president of the region, confirmed the occurrence and said that a 9-man team has been sent to the area to investigate the event. “So far, security forces have taken into custody few locals suspected of involvement in the incident,” Gatlowak told The Reporter.
Verdanta took over the plantation five years ago from the Ministry of Agriculture on a 50-year lease contract with fairly cheap terms. According to the contract signed at the time, the company agreed to pay 111 birr annual lease price for the plantation extending 3012 hectares wide in Godera woreda and Gumare kebele. The total lease quotation of 16.7 million birr was agreed to be payed over the course of the 50 years at 334,332 birr per annum.
However, Verdanta requested the land for tea plantation before the ministry took over the land provision from the region and hence was able to receive 5,000 hectares although the contract with ministry say 3012. According to sources, the company have kept control of the 5,000 hectares until present, which residents of the area consider to be a forest resource and national forest region. The two kebeles of Godera woreda, Gomare and Kubu, are among the 58 primary national forest regions in the country. According to residents in the locality, the area is also rich in forest agricultural productions like honey, spice and coffee.
The vigilant residents say that the plantation company was offered is indeed a forest area that deserves to be preserved. Whereas both the regional government and the ministry say that the plot of land is no more than scattered bushes and that it does not qualify to be called a forest. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) standards, a forest area can be referred to as such as long as it is at least half a hectare wide and have trees more than five meters tall. Residents say that even the plot that is held by the Verdanta is 5,000 hectares and that it has tree which are 10 meters tall in length. At one time former president of the republic, Girma Woldegiorgis appealed to both the ministry and the region not give the land which should be preserved as national forest area. Tea plantation require the entire vegetation to be cleared out from the area, hence the president appealed to reconsider the decision. However, both the ministry and regional administration did not want to accept the request and hence the company stayed in possession of the property until the incident.
On the other had, the widespread rumors accusing the Verdanta of harvesting timber from the forest while it was supposed to be planting tea was also not accepted by the authorities. Sources say that on quite various occasions authorities have discovered logs of timber products leaving the property of Verdanta. However, the regional president did not deny this but said that the company have has assured his administration that the timber is not for sale. Although not verified by the findings of the investigating committee yet, sources indicate that it was the vigilantes of Godera who have taken matters into their own hands.
Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) have provided 89.5 million birr in loans to Verdanta. Hence, some are asking if DBE collateral has been damaged in the process. Efforts to get response from the Bank was not fruitful, and other are also asking if the investigative committee could come up with an amicable solution for the residents and the company in question.
