Ethiopians stormed World Bank in Washington DC

Ethiopians Saturday morning stormed the 17th Street Office complex of the World Bank
Ethiopians in their numbers Saturday morning stormed the 17th Street Office complex of the World Bank in Washington DC, protesting the bank’s alleged support for land grab and ethnic cleansing by President Girma Wolde-Giorgis
Displaying placards with various inscriptions like “World Bank stop financing Human rights violations,” “USA say no to ethnic cleansing of the Amharas in Ethiopia” and what will it take to end poverty? Empower people not dictators” among others, they claimed that they decided to protest to the headquarters of the bank against forceful eviction of poor farmers by alleged corrupt tycoons and foreign corporations to enrich themselves.
According to the protesters, “in Gambella more than three million hectares of Annuak land was sold to foreigners to produce food for their own people. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations claim securing land to feed their people for the future. More than 70,000 Annuaks have already been forced from their land and another 150,000 will be displaced in the coming few years.
They alleged that these evictions and ethnic cleansing is financed by the World Bank as they claim the Ethiopian government cannot do them without support from the World Bank and financing by the International Monetary Fund, (IMF).
“The World Bank and IMF are financing it at all levels including paying salaries for those who are killing the poor people. Annuaks are now an endangered species so are the Mursi people who were chased away from the South Omo Valley hunting ground to clear the land for the regime’s sugar company.
They said that if the World Bank could deny loan to Cambodia in 2011 when that government was displacing its farmers, there is no reason why the Ethiopian case should be different demanding the Bank to come clean and distance itself from the alleged crimes being committed by the present administration in that country.
“We endorse the demand of the Human Rights Watch on its recent press release on Ethiopia for the World Bank to do its own internal investigation on the land eviction issue in Ethiopia and make it public. Thousands of Ethiopians were and are evicted; many children, women and elderly are dying as a result of this. The World Bank either has to condone or condemn this human rights violation and crime against humanity” they added.

Ethiopia: Jailed hero journalist Woubshet Taye off to Zeway death camp

The Horn Times News 20 April 2013
by Getahune Bekele, South Africa

Jailed hero journalist Woubshet Taye As the unpopular, corrupt and inefficient minority junta continues to govern the police state Ethiopia with brute iron hand, dealing ruthlessly with political prisoners and jailed journalists whom it blames for causing the late despot Meles Zenawi’s “ untimely” death; Ethiopian political prisoners have fallen on hard times filled with dread and terror.
The former Editor of Awramba Times, Wubeshet Taye is the latest Prisoner to be sent to Zeway death camp to serve the remaining time of his 14 years sentence away from his family, with the likes of Bekele Gerba, Albana Lelisa and several others who are already condemned to the notorious facility.
Chained in leg iron and carrying his belongings in tiny bag, hundreds of curios inmates at Kilinto prison watched the young scribe taken away by more than 20 TPLF soldiers on Tuesday morning April 16 2013.
A friend of the terrorized journalist confirmed to the Horn Times that Woubshet Taye is currently in Zeway, still in leg iron like all political prisoners.
The 2011 trial of Woubshet Taye was at the time described unfair and was way below the international fair trial standard under the controversial and draconian anti-terrorism law designed to persecute and silence dissenting voices.
The Horn Times franticly tried to talk to TPLF officials in charge of prison administration to find out the reason behind sending opposition prisoners particularly Ethnic Oromos and the Amharas to Zeway during the known malaria season, but none of them were willing to reply including the office of the man himself, warlord Berket Simeon.

Ethiopia’s genocidal minority junta verging on madness?

The Horn Times News 21 April 2013
by Getahune Bekele, South Africa

Human rights institutions urged to assist in stopping the illegal transfer of political prisoners to Zeway death camp
Located 170 kms south-east of Addis Ababa on the outskirt of Zeway town, the Zeway death camp has been in the news recently after the ruling minority junta began sending political prisoners to the camp since early March 2013.
Chillingly dubbed “the Auschwitz of Africa” the prison was established by former TPLF strong man Tamrat Layne
Warlord turned Pastor Tamrat Laine
Warlord turned Pastor Tamrat Layne
(pictured) in 1993 as forced labor camp to provide cheap slave labor force for his massive sunflower and vegetable farms in the area which he co-owned with the uncontestable black billionaire Sheik Alamoudi Mohammed.
However, after the 2005 nationwide anti-TPLF insurrection, the walled in ghetto with high death rate than any other prison in Ethiopia was transformed into death camp by the late evil tyrant Meles Zenawi.
The high death rate is attributed to malaria infestation, cholera outbreak, tuberculosis, severe malnutrition and unbearable overcrowding; and to widespread torture and extrajudicial killings committed by carefully selected corrupt Tigre camp guards.
In the camp synonymous with poor sanitation, prisoners drink untreated water drawn from the nearby Lake Zeway. The stench of human waste and raw sewerage hangs in the air and gets worse during rainy season.
According to investigation done by the Horn Times and vital information obtained from former inmates, suicide is rampant at the country’s most brutal facility where the minority Tigre junta enslaves Ethiopians forcing them to live with rats and lice inside concrete cells in unspeakable squalor.
“Zeway concentration camp is the most frightening place to be at specially if you are a political prisoner. To survive there you need malaria tablet, the most sought after item in the camp. The brutal Tigre guards sell two tablets of proguanil Hydrochloride and chloroquine phosphate for up to 3 USD to those who afford it, and the smuggled medication costs double that amount.” A former political prisoner who spent 8 years in the facility without ever given a trial date told the Horn Times.
“But for Amhara and Oromo political prisoners things are very different. Even when they produce money to buy medication the genocidal TPLF camp guards would tell them ‘keep your money, you are here to die.’ All guard towers inside Zeway are mini-enterprises for the Tigres who are making extra cash by selling medications, insect repellants, cigarettes and other basic goods at inflated price. Your life in Zeway camp as political prisoner is at the complete mercy of the sadist guards. I am wondering what will happen the day this junta collapses and the entire wronged army of political prisoners attain freedom. Surely there will be a reckoning…” the ex- inmate from the Rift valley city of Awassa warned.

Ethiopia’s Ayele Abshero was third over the 42.195-km race. Last year’s champion Wilson Kipsang of Kenya finished fifth with Ugandan Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich sixth.
Britain’s Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metres champion Mo Farah had dropped out of the race at the halfway stage as planned.
Kenya’s Olympic silver medallist Priscah Jeptoo won the women’s event in an unofficial time of two hours 20 minutes 15 seconds.
World champion Edna Kiplagat was runner up for the second successive year and Japan’s Yukiko Akaba took third.
Jeptoo had been leading with Kiplagat at 30 km but began to increase her pace to leave her rival trailing and eventually won by over a minute.
Ethiopia’s Olympic champion and pre-race favourite Tiki Gelana dropped off the pace after colliding with a wheelchair athlete at a drinks station at 15 km.

Ethiopians in UK to express their outrage by holding protest at the British Parliament

    Wondimu Mekonnen
The recent forceful eviction of members of the Amharas from Benishangul-GumuzAs you all have heard and know by now the latest events unfolding in our country are reaching such critical stage that makes the situation intolerable to anyone that shares a remote sense of humanity and justice. At separate times in the last 22 years, the hate-driven and ethnicist regime of TPLF/EPRDF unleashed its excess against the various groups of people in Ethiopia.
What makes the latest targeted assault on members of the ‘Amhara’ group living in Benshangul-Gumz region is the mass scale of the action, the callous nature it has been perpetrated and the manner the crime was completed in apparent evident way. Ethiopians living everywhere are appalled and outraged by the heinous measures of ethnic cleansing conducted by the regime. They have been denouncing the crimes perpetrated against ‘Amharas’ and appealing to the international community to thoroughly investigate the matter. Ethiopians worldwide have been voicing their firm criticism to those who have been giving continuous support and emboldening the regime. They have repeatedly stressed the money given by the donor countries including the UK had been used by those who commit gross human rights violations in Ethiopia.
Ethiopians in London representing all sectors of the community have organised a protest vigil to send a clear message that they also denounce and deplore the act perpetrated on ‘Amharas’ by TPLF led regime. On the day of the protest they will submit their protest letter to UK government, while at the Parliament session the Foreign & Commonwealth Office will answer to the oral question that will be made by Mr Dave Anderson (MP). The protest will be held:
Date: Tuesday 23rd April 2013
Time: 2.00 – 7.00pm
Place: In front of the House of Commons/Parliament
Please make sure take the least moral action an Ethiopian can make by being a voice to your fellow citizen by attending this important protest event. Please circulate this information widely by sharing it to all your contacts and networks.
With all the best wishes,
On behalf of the organising group.
