Leaders open landmark AU summit in Ethiopia

Meeting to mark African bloc's 50th jubilee expected to call for dropping of ICC charges against Kenyan leader.
Dozens of African leaders met in the Ethiopian capital to mark 50 years since the founding of the African Union, a continentwide organisation that helped liberate Africa from colonial masters and which now is trying to stay relevant on a continent regularly troubled by conflict.

Opening the summit on Saturday that was attended by US Secretary of State John Kerry and other foreign dignitaries, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said the AU's original pan-Africanist aspirations remain relevant for a continent where many states are still struggling to overcome rampant poverty and violence.
"This historic day marks not only a great leap forward in the Pan-Africanist quest for freedom, independence and unity but also the beginning of our collective endeavor for the realisations of Africa's socio-economic emancipation,'' he said.
"The major responsibility of the current and future generations of Africans is.to create a continent free from poverty and conflict and an Africa whose citizens would enjoy middle- income status.''
African leaders have gathered to witness celebrations in Addis Ababa for the 50th jubilee of the continental bloc, with its many problems set aside for a day to mark the progress that has been made.
Brazil said Saturday it plans to cancel $900mn worth of debt in 12 African countries, as part of a broader strategy to boost ties with the continent.
"The idea of having Africa as a special relationship for Brazil is strategic for Brazil's foreign policy," presidential spokesman Thomas Traumann told reporters on the sidelines of African Union celebrations to mark 50 years of the continental bloc, attended by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
High-profile guests
Mass dancing troupes performed musical dramas on Saturday to about 10,000 guests in a big hall in the Ethiopian capital, home to the African Union.
Today's 54-member AU is the successor of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), established amid the heady days as independence from colonial rule swept the continent in 1963.
African leaders were expected to be joined by Francois Hollande, the French president; Wang Yang, China's vice-premier; and John Kerry, US secretary of state.
Mali is expected to be discussed: it is preparing to receive a UN peacekeeping force to support French soldiers fighting formerly al-Qaeda-linked rebels in the desert north since January.
The agenda will also likely include Madagascar - in political deadlock since a 2009 coup - and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where UN-backed government soldiers are struggling to defeat rebels.

Ethiopia Shall Rise!

Ethiopia Rising!

The Organization of African Unity (OAU)/African Union (AU replaced OAU in 2002) began celebrating its Golden Jubilee in Addis Ababa this past week. In May 1963 when the OAU was founded, Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah accentuated his closing remarks by reciting a poem he had specially commissioned as a crowning tribute to an ascendant Ethiopia. Addressing H.I.M. Haile Selassie, President Nkrumah said, “It only remains for me, Your Majesty, on behalf of my colleagues and myself, to convey to the Government and people of Ethiopia especially to His Imperial Majesty, my sincere expression of gratitude for a happy and memorable stay in Addis Ababa…” With confident cadence, Nkrumah recited a poem of such exquisite eloquence and grace that my eyes well up every time I read it. These were Nkruma’s own words.
Ethiopia shall rise
Ethiopia, Africa’s bright gem
Set high among the verdant hills
That gave birth to the unfailing
Waters of the Nile
Ethiopia shall rise
Ethiopia, land of the wise;
Ethiopia, bold cradle of Africa’s ancient rule
And fertile school
Of our African culture;
Ethiopia, the wise
Shall rise
And remould with us the full figure
Of Africa’s hopes
And destiny.

When the erection of a commemorative statue on the grounds of the AU was proposed for H.I.M. in 2011, the late “great visionary leader” in Ethiopia opposed it saying, “It is only Nkrumah who is remembered whenever we talk about pan Africanism. It is a shame not to accept his role.” He succeeded in denying H.I.M. Haile Selassie the simple recognition of a bronze statute. What a shame to be black hearted! What a shame to be shameless! What a crying shame to minimize, trivialize and marginalize the contributions of the prime architect of African unity! History bears witness that H.I.M. exterted extraordinary effort and brought together the “Casablanca” and “Monrovia” Groups making itpossible to launch the OAU. He worked tirelessly for the cause of African unity. At that historic inaugural conference, H.I.M. made the most compelling case, the most passionate plea for African unity, independence and Pan-Africanism:

Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia crossed the finish line in downtown Boston April 15 well ahead of the two blasts that killed three spectators and left more than 250 people injured.
Desisa, speaking through an interpreter at a ceremony in Addis Ababa Sunday attended by Kerry, said it was “a great honor” to be at the podium and to be afforded the opportunity to pay tribute to the bombing victims.
He said his “joy turned to sorrow” upon learning of the carnage caused by the explosion.
“As a gesture of my solidarity with the victims of this senseless act of violence, I will return to Boston and gift my medal to the people of Boston in honor and in memory of those who suffered and those who died on that day, like 8-year-old Martin Richard,” the winning runner said.
“My message to all of you this morning is that sport should always be a source of pleasure and enjoyment, healthy recreation, positive competition. Sport holds the power to unify people and to connect people from all over the world with one another, allowing them the opportunity to share in their common humanity and to celebrate the richness of our world’s cultural diversity. Sport should never be used as a battleground.

Injustice in Afar Region of Ethiopia is injustice in Germany

Afar Human Rights Statement
We learned from reliable sources that the dictator and President of Afar Regional State in Ethiopia, Mr Ismail Ali Sirro is currently visiting Berlin, the capital of Germany. The Core of Human Rights violation Areas in Afar Region of Ethiopia
The Afar people in Ethiopia have suffered a gross human rights violation during Mr Ismail Ali Sirros leadership. The number of people detained without fair trial has dramatically increased the latest years; people have been displaced from their homes and many were killed coldblooded. As highest leader of the Regional State, all crimes and corruption is taking place under President Isamails leadership, hence he is accountable for atrocities and human rights violation committed in Afar Region.
The Afar people whose majority are pastoralists, have been displaced from their land without any alternative for subsistence; they have lost their livestock and are exposed for starvation as a result of land grabbing policy of Mr Ismails leadership. There are documented testimonies that confirm the Mr Ismail personally threatened people to leave their home to facilitate sugar cane commercial farming, where those who refused were shot to death at spot. The order was given by the president of the region. Hence the crime committed by Mr Ismail Ali Sirro and the EPRDF Regime in Ethiopia is defined as crimes against humanity which is in line with the mission of the International Criminal Court.
The rampant corruption taking place in Afar Region has made Mr Ismail and his wife Mrs Fatuma Abdalla from having nothing to multimillionaires in ten years period. Moreover, there is information that the stolen many from starving population has been placed in foreign banks in Europe, North America and Asia.
Afar Human Right Organisation has been systematically following and voicing about the suffering, killings and detention of the voiceless Afar pastoralist. We believe that it’s unacceptable that dictators and murders are allowed to live in luxury in democratic countries like Germany. Therefore injustice in Afar Region should be considered as injustice in Germany and elsewhere. Hence, we appeal to German authorities and justice system to facilitate the handover of the criminals like Mr Ismail to the International Criminal Court.
