Doctor Arkebe Oqubay flying like a pig

by Abebe Gellaw
Until recently, Arkebe Oqubay was known to have spent much of his life on projects of bloody conflicts, corruption, tyranny or gross violation of human rights. It was a  total surprise when one of TPLF’s topguns was introduced as a record-breaking scholar.
It emerged that Arkebe has been bragging to friends, relatives and admirers since last October that he got a Ph.D from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) with great honor and distinction. He claimed that he shattered academic records, an achievement that guaranteed his name a special place in the honor list of the school. That is good for him, but why is SOAS contradicting this amazing scholar who claims to be the first to hold his PhD in record time and first for his unblemished dissertation?Arkebe Oqubay was known to have spent much of his life on projects of bloody conflicts
On November 8th, Isayas Astebeha Abaye, a well-known apologist and flunkey of the dictatorship in Ethiopia, published a “breaking news” story on Aigaforum.com trumpeting Arkebe’s miraculous and unique intellectual prowess.
According to Isayas Astebeha Abaye, who got the story from the horse’s mouth:
This week Dr. Arkebe Oqubay was recognized as an outstanding Scholar in the Academic [sic] circles of London. He broke the academic record of doctoral school in the University of London (School of Oriental and African Studies) for the first time by finishing the four year program within 23 months with high honor and great distinction. In this century old institution (established in 1916), the doctoral program is set for four years maximum to defend and finish the doctoral thesis. Most of the candidates defend and finished with difficulties and hardship (if they are lucky and extraordinary).Arkebe has finished [sic] within 23 months and surprised the department of Development Studies, the university professors and students altogether [sic]. Never heard of such great achievements in such short period of time, what a person!!!!!!! His external examiners from Cambridge and other well known [sic] academic institutions awarded him “PASS WITH OUT [sic] CORRECTION” on the spot; which means great distinction with great honor (never happened and never heard of).Arkebe did it!!!! His name and his country’s name is in the history book of this famous University [sic]. What an achievement!!! We are proud of him!!! Congratulations to Dr. Arkebe Oqubay. [That was Isayas Abaye’s badly scripted story, which not only breaks all the basic rules of news reporting but also published online WITHOUT CORRECTION or verification.]
The brazen “story” about Arkebe’s amazing accomplishments in London trended well on the social networking sites creating buzz and excitement among TPLF’s faithful drones who danced and ran victory laps to Isayas Abaye’s song: “Dr Arkebe breaks the record in a century old Academic Institution [sic].”
The big trouble with Arkebe’s “record-breaking” academic achievement is that it was manifestly false. As the story was evidently dubious and nonsensical, we had to send a copy of Aigaforum’s story to SOAS and the University of London for fact-checking and verification. The school’s Directorate of External Relations spent almost three weeks digging through its records trying to verify the identity of the phenomenal scholar “whose name and his country’s name” were said to have entered the “history books”, just to borrow the words of the amateur reporter.
After careful and lengthy investigation, Vesna Siljanovska, SOAS’s communication officer, verified that Arkebe Oqubay Metiku had indeed completed his doctoral studies at SOAS in October 2013. While trying to avoid some of the most awkward questions about the newmint scholar, she disclosed that his dissertation focused on the “industrial policy of Ethiopia”. Siljanovska also indicated that the school never heard of the “scholar’s” record-breaking feats.
SOAS communication officers also tried to explain that the so-called record-breaking achievement is common not only at SOAS but also in other UK universities. “Like many other UK universities, a PhD is usually at least three years in length but candidates can apply to submit after two years of full – time enrolment subject to the approval of the Supervisory Committee and the Associate Dean (Research) of the relevant Faculty. While the majority of candidates studying for a PhD in the UK complete within three years, there are a number of students who complete in a longer or shorter time period,” SOAS said in a carefully crafted statement.
Prof. Christopher Cramer, who teaches in the Department of Development Studies at SOAS, also declined to discuss details about Arkebe’s miracles due to the university’s privacy policy. But Cramer wrote in an email that Arkebe achieved nothing extraordinary or unprecedented as claimed in the Aigaforum story. Prof. Cramer was clearly amused by the claim the first “no corrections thesis,” but he declared that the pompous claim was “completely untrue”.
Asked what Arkebe’s new research finding could be on “industrial policy in Ethiopia” that he and his TPLF tyrannical clique formulated and imposed on the poor nation that they have brutalized and robbed for over two decades, Prof. Cramer, who was apparently the good doctor’s adviser, also declined to comment. It should be remembered that Arkebe was one of the architects of the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT), the illegal TPLF-controlled business conglomerate that is widely accused of symbolizing apartheid-like crony capitalism sucking the blood and gnawing the bones of the poor people of Ethiopia
One of Ethiopia’s leading rights advocates, Prof. Alemayehu Gebremariam, finds the revelation quite interesting. He says  the fact that Arkebe was approved to do his dissertation on “industrial policy in Ethiopia”, a policy paper that he and his TPLF sidekicks had been toying around since TPLF took power in 1991, raises legitimate questions.
“If Arkebe had indeed finished his dissertation in “record time”, it is because he was copyediting his old policy papers instead of doing original research, which is what a doctoral dissertation is supposed to be,” the professor said.
“If Arkebe’s dissertation is of such an exceptional scholarly and scientific quality sufficient to shift paradigms, why is it not published in whole or in part in the leading scholarly journals of the world?” he asked.
Arkebe has a history of being a clumsy publicity hog. When he was the mayor of Addis Ababa, he once plastered his mugshot on huge promotional billboards under the guise of raising awareness on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Azeb Mesfin, wife of the late dictator Meles Zenawi and Arkebe’s arch foe, reportedly ordered the removal of his outsize images from the city centers just within a few days. She reportedly felt that Arkebe would say and do anything for self-promotion and self-aggrandizement.
Prof. Alemayehu wonders why TPLF’s tyrannical midgets seek to puff themselves up as intellectual giants. “Those who aspire to achieve terminal degrees do so because they love research, discovery of new knowledge, truth and make significant contributions to the body of knowledge in their field of study. Conferring a Ph.D. on the unenlightened is like dressing a hoodlum in a designer suit. It looks good but everyone knows that the man under the suit is still a hoodlum,” he commented.
Isaias Abaye and his bosses should take their own advice. He recently warned us about Member of the European Parliament and a great friend of Ethiopia, the Honorable Ana Gomes, who reduced the late tyrant Meles Zenawi into dust with her sharp commentary. To the dismay of Zenawi’s worshippers like Isayas, she bluntly stated that the demise of the cruel and deceitful dictator was a good opportunity for Ethiopia.
In his silly tantrums against the respected MEP, Isayas lamented:   “Unlike the early days of the online media, we have all learned not to be easily shocked, surprised, or overly excited by what we read online. Mostly, we try to verify the reliability and reputation of the source. When we read Ana Gomez’s [sic] interview with a journalist from a local private media, we didn’t even doubt the authenticity of this story knowing it is the angry Hana Gobeze….
Perhaps Isaias and Arkebe do not realize that in  the Information Age liars, cheats, con artists and fibbers do not last a nano second without being exposed. Maybe the entire pack of TPLF’s liars, robbers and tyrants can take a lesson from this amusing episode. They should know, “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.” If Arkebe must be extolled for breaking records, it should be for “record breaking lies” and for telling lies with disgrace. But he must know that his lies will NOT PASS WITHOUT CORRECTION.
It is said that old habits die hard. Sadly Arkebe miserably failed to learn that knowledge must be based on truth. It also appeared that SOAS also failed to equip its windbag graduate with the basic skills of researching at least easily detectable and verifiable facts. Yet SOAS can be forgiven as neither PhD nor professorship changes the character of pigs that are identical with the ones in George Orwell’s Animal Farm. .
In the footsteps of their fallen demigod Meles Zenawi, TPLF’s dictators, robber barons, torturers and their heartless accomplices such as Arkebe and pedler of lies Isayas Abaye have a guaranteed place, not in honor books, but in the trashbin of history. No unimpressive PhD, professorship or self-imagined glories and trophies will change the fate of these dictatorial fibbers.
In the world of Aigaland’s Animal Farm, pigs may soar and fly in the skies. But in the real world we all live in, TPLF’s pigs can only dream of being eagles or falcons. Whatever any pigs dream of, they have to live with the fact that they are just pigs. This is the inconvenient truth that no genius pig with a PhD from SOAS, Harvard or Stanford can change and refute.
Speaking of stellar academic achievement, a recent true story about a truly outstanding Ethiopian scholar has filled our hearts with joy and pride. It was disclosed a couple of weeks ago that Dr. Mulatu Lemma, an award-winning mathematicsDr. Mulatu Lemma, an award-winning mathematics professor professor at Savannah State University, was honored as the 2013 Georgia Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement of Support of Education (CASE). His name and his country’s name is in the history book of academia for being one of the top mathematics professors in the United States. What an achievement!
It should be noted that Arkebe’s record-breaking tall tales of being the most outstanding PhD holder in the entire history of SOAS, even if his dream for academic grandiose has now fallen apart, must be recognized at least for the effort. The “scholar”, who has not yet published a single academic paper or a mini-newspaper article, must be honored named Doctor Arkebe Kedadaw!
While the warriors of truth and freedom such as Eskinder Nega, Reeyot Alemu, Andualem Aragie, Bekele Gerba and Ustaz Abubakir, are languishing in TPLF dark dungeons, Arkebe had the luxury of jetting to Europe in search of academic grandiose. Quite certainly Arkebe is unlikely to get the honors and accolades he craves badly while he is alive. So just like Zenawi, he deserves to be honored with a state funeral!

THE FUTURE IS IN OUR HANDS

Imru Zelleke (Ambassador)
The high fever that has spread the all over the Diaspora seems to have simmered down to a tolerable level. Most of refugees in Saudi Arabia have been repatriated home and the few left will get back soon. Those still in jeopardy are the ones under care of the UNHCR in Yemen, for whom a permanent residence is to be found. Otherwise Ethiopians refugees are in dire and precarious conditions in Middle East and African countries where they are abused and often killed.Ethiopian foreign workers in Saudi Arabia
The refugees that have returned seem to have fallen from the frying pan into the hot brazier. It is said that upon arrival home whatever processions (money, jewelry, valuable items) they have manage to save are confiscated by the regime, and they are forced to go back to their Kilil of origin; places where they run away from to begin with. The problem has evidently moved from Saudi Arabia back to Ethiopia their home land.
Without indulging into a lengthy and verbose discourse it should be obvious that the core of the problem is at Home in Ethiopia. People living in peace and freedom in their own country do not migrate unless they are subject to extremely unfavorable conditions at home. Ethiopians love their country and are not traditionally migrants, it is only in the last four decades of the post-revolutionary era that such mass migration has been occurring. Moreover, Ethiopia has presently the highest brain drain in the world. This trend will certainly continue as long as the coercive ethnic dictatorship at home is not removed and replaced by an all embracing national democratic system of governance.
At the cost of many precious lives and resources, attempts to establish a government based on democracy and freedom have been many throughout the years. Alas, all have failed ignominiously leaving in their wake a people deprived of freedom, basic rights reduced to beggary and mendacity in their own land. We all know the degradation and humiliation that our society is subjected too, yet we don’t seem to react as we should against such perfidy; but for making long winded statements and pursuing a plethora of people and political groups who so far have led us to nowhere.
We are ninety million man and women, the ruling gang count maybe a few thousand at the center, are they really invincible? No! their strength is our weakness and incoherent attitude towards our own existence. The ordinary people in Ethiopia have realized a long time ago that their fate is in their hands, they have risen and demonstrated more than once their patriotism and ultimate desire for freedom and justice. It is time to give them a helping hand, free of ulterior motifs. Actually they don’t even need us, all the resources required are available at home. This said, we in the Diaspora that enjoy unlimited economic and political resources, could accelerate the process and bring about peace and a promising future to our brethren in Ethiopia.
We have all the human and materiel means in our hands, let’s abandon all these squabbles and divisions amongst ourselves and make a common front to liberate the country from the scourge that is destroying it. Let’s make a real brotherly effort for an ETHIOPIAN RENAISSANCE. The high spirit of patriotism and indignation that has risen amongst the Diaspora, offers the opportunity to form a broad national political movement that will help install a genuine democracy in Ethiopia. For my part I am willing to assist and help a truly made effort to realize this goal.
If we fail our people in this noble endeavor, it we will be a disavowal of our own humanity for which future generations not forgive us.
Respectfully.
Imru Zelleke.

Ethiopia: Human Rights

Ethiopiawinnet: Council for the Defense of Citizen Rights
December 10, 2013 is Human Rights Day (HRD). Proclaimed in 1950 by the United Nations as a marker for the UniversalGreen, Yellow and Red, Ethiopian flag Declaration of Human Rights and in 1993 as the establishment of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, HRD is a solemn day to remind us of the dire human rights situation in Ethiopia. Thousands of courageous political prisoners languish in the country’s notorious jails without due process as do many prisoners of conscience (such as journalists and religious leaders).
It may be recalled that the Ethiopian people were subjected to unbelievable atrocities by the military (Derg) government as well as groups opposed to it in the 1970s and 1980s. After a partial restoration of the freedoms of speech and association in the 1990s under the ethnicist EPRDF government, the rising demand for a meaningful exercise of citizen rights and political engagement since 2004 has been met with draconian laws, mass arrests, and miscarriage of justice with impunity. Ethiopia annually is ranked with alarming consistency among the worst countries as a routine violator of human and political rights by such international observers as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders, and the U.S. Department of State.
We need only mention some of the more notable actions in the country over the past five years:
  • On the heels major electoral losses to the opposition parties in the 2005 parliamentary elections, the defacto one-party state summarily arrested opposition politicians and some 2000 demonstrators, and killed 193 peaceful protesters in the streets.
  • This was followed by a massive recruitment of the youth to join the ruling party which swelled ruling-party membership to some 5 million. The recruits are trained and paid to constitute an ever expanding network of control of citizens down to street blocks in the cities and isolated hamlets in the rural areas.
  • The intensification of the suppression of political dissent aimed at incapacitating independent political parties, decimating the independent media, and hamstringing independent NGOs was enshrined in law in 2009. That year, a draconian Charities and Societies Law was passed which, among other things, prohibited local charities from engaging in human rights and voter education activities if they receive more than 10% of their income from foreign sources or from soliciting domestic resources in excess of USD 2,500 before registration as well as engaging in income generating activities that are only incidental to their purposes. This plus the almost unlimited authority of the NGO regulatory agency has had the effect of nullifying their right to free speech, advocacy, and international contact of local NGOs. As if this is not enough, the politically insecure regime enacted in 2009 the universally condemned Anti-Terrorism Law whose broad sweep criminalizes virtually any criticism of government policy. Predictably, this law has been deployed as a thinly disguised excuse for politically-motivated arrests of opposition leaders, bloggers and print journalists, including Andualem Aragie, Eskinder Nega, Reeyot Alemu, Wubshet Taye, and notable leaders of the Muslim Community who resisted serious government interference in their religious affairs.
  • Ethiopians have also been subjected to unprecedented internal displacements and orchestrated labor exports to the Middle East which has opened them to abuse an appalling and inhuman mistreatment we are witnessing in Saudi Arabia. Pastoral communities in the Gambella and Omo Valley regions have been coercively displaced from their ancestral lands to make way for mega farms leased to foreign investors, and mega power or irrigation projects—with little planning or compensation. Furthermore, tens of thousands of young Ethiopians, desperate to escape chronic unemployment and government harassment, are being killed and brazenly subjected to physical and mental abuse in Saudi Arabia, Yemen and several Mediterranean countries while their own government looks the other way.
ETHIOPIAWINNET calls upon all Ethiopians and the international community to observe this solemn occasion as sober moment for expressing our collective concerns with the worsening human rights situation in Ethiopia. We are especially baffled that a poster-child of rights abuse has a seat in the U.N. Human Rights Council.
We urge all Ethiopians and friends of the Ethiopian people to be united behind the long and arduous struggle to honor in practice the human, civil, and political rights of all.

No More Green Terror in Saudi Arabia!

by Tedla Asfaw, NY
Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia faced a “Green Terror”
Tuesday Dec. 10, 2013 winter has arrived early in New York City. Light snow has just stopped dropping around 2 pm. The candlelight vigil in front of Saudi Arabia Mission to United Nations for the third time in a month went without any problem thanks to the brave New Yorkers who came out no matter what  not deterred by cold weather.
This past November Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia faced a “Green Terror” a terror inflicted on our people who were sheltered under Saudi Arabia Green Flag. Unknown numbers of Ethiopians were murdered and women were gang raped and many were viciously beaten. The world saw also mutilation of a dead Ethiopian young man covering his head with the Ethiopian Flag. The terror was against Ethiopians in Riyadh that forced them to go to deportation shelter for their own “safety”.
Similar crime is pending to unfold in Jeddah while the Arab media made headline news of “compassion for Ethiopian woman” that was on labor on her way back home with fellow deportees. The story said the plane landed back in Saudi soil where the woman gave birth to healthy baby boy. The story continued the Ethiopian community thanked Saudi Arabia for its “compassion”. This is not out of compassion but due to the Ethiopian Diaspora countering the Green Terror for the last four weeks by exposing Saudi Arabia Kingdom of Shame for the world.
More than 8,000 of our women deported were found to be pregnant. God knows how many of them due to rape by thugs and slave owners who are known for raping Ethiopian young maids for a very long time forcing some of the victims to fight back in some cases killing the abusers family members. The Arab Medias are portraying our women as dangerous not to be trusted to be kept as house maids. Many are now locked up in their master’s houses. They are now an endangered species. We demand their freedom now!
Woyane Foreign Minister is twitting us that 118,000 are back in Ethiopia expected half of that number to come soon. We also learnt that the Riyadh deportation is to continue in Jeddah where many will be deported forcibly rounded up.
News from Jeddah Ethiopians is very disturbing. Many who are now classified as “illegal” lived over there for many years and had properties which they have to leave and sign to the deportation shelter as requested by the Ethiopian slave traders. Many said will not go to shelter unless they get buyers for their properties.
The Green Terror of Riyadh is now casting its ugly shadow on Jeddah. Saudi Security and thugs will go after Ethiopians viciously and more blood will be shed. Today’s vigil is calling for justice for our people especially those left behind.
Ethiopians should not be deported raped, beaten or looted for the second time in public. We will hold the Saudi government accountable for all these crimes. We are calling all Ethiopians in the Diaspora to keep on pressing the Saudi government to avert a bloodbath.
Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia only hope is the Diaspora Voice. Unfortunately, some bought the number coming out from Teodros Adhanom as a job well done and tell us to “celebrate” “Yelemat Deportation” with them.
Some are spending valuable time on how to organize fund for those in Saudi Arabia. We were told many times by the victims in Saudi no one can reach those in shelter to give even water let alone money. Money is not the issue now. What they asked us to be their “police” and hold criminals to be held accountable for their crimes. We are calling on their behalf for dignified deportation for all who wanted to go.
Our letter that demanded “Justice for Ethiopians” killed, raped, beaten, jailed, hospitalized, abandoned and captive slaves in households was received very politely. Huge difference from the first rally almost a month ago where we were yelled by security. The Nov 18 huge rally was a warning to the Saudi Mission that we will come to their door step until our people get justice. Similar warnings are given by the Ethiopian Diaspora all over the world targeting Saudi Embassies. Proud to be an Ethiopian!
Yesterday candlelight vigil coincided by accident with the memorial service for  Madiba in Johannesburg, South Africa. What a better way of honoring Madiba by doing the right thing, Stand for Justice in New York City. Madiba spent 27 years of his life in jail for Saying No to Injustice!! We can and should spend few hours of our life time for saying no to all who abuse our people, be it in Saudi Arabia or back home or wherever it may be. We are honored to light our candles in memory of  Madiba in front of United Nations holding our flag high. Rest in Peace Madiba!
President Obama on the memorial ceremony yesterday was challenging all of us to follow the footstep of this African Giant and stand for Justice. Yes we Ethiopians would like to challenge President Obama too. Mr. President speak up for Ethiopians who are abused by USA ally the Saudi Arabia Kingdom. We hold you accountable to your own words, “Let us honor Madiba by following his example”. President Obama has few more years ahead where we Africans will remember him for his character not for his African skin. Yes You Can!!!!!
