From the news posted on the Ethiopian Diaspora website in USA I learned the Ethiopian political asylum seekers saga in Switzerland. Ethiopians are mistreated and labelled as “economic refugees” not to be given a political refugee status by the authorities from the very beginning.
There is a camp to lock Ethiopians for more than three years until their case is heard. The camp life which rotates individuals like livestock from camp to camp drove some to insanity and some attempted suicide. I have not heard of such camp for asylum seekers in “civilized” world. How could this be in Geneva where we have many international establishments that works for human rights, freedom and justice?
Ethiopians even are categorized as “others” in Swiss refugees newsletter. This is very troubling. A refugee is a refugee, number does not matter. Life is not a commodity or something that is to be traded on stock floor measured in numbers. On top of that most refugees who asked for political asylum will hear their case in few months while for Ethiopian asylum seekers it takes more than three years. Why is Switzerland mistreating Ethiopians?
It is fair to say that Switzerland is discriminating against Ethiopians. Ethiopians in the Diaspora will mobilize to expose this discriminatory practice and put pressure on the Switzerland government to stop discriminating Ethiopian asylum seekers.
